Cushing clips Lady Pioneer softball in final scrimmage

STILLWATER, Okla. — With the softball season starting next week, the Stillwater Lady Pioneers and the Cushing Lady Tigers got to see how they have progressed in a scrimmage at Little Couch Park.

“We didn’t come out here and play like we can play,” Stillwater High School coach Amber Davis said. “We saw some good things. We had some good hits and some leadoff doubles. We got better at the end of the day.”

“Hitting will come,” Cushing coach Chad Short said. “Pitching is always first early in the year. We will catch on with the offense part. Our defense should be solid all year. I’m really pleased.”

This was the Lady Tigers’ first scrimmage of the season. The Lad Pioneers scrimmaged earlier in the week at a round robin festival in Shawnee, facing Newcastle, Washington, Piedmont and others.

Cushing outscored Stillwater 2-1 in the six-inning affair. Both defenses were stingy as each team only surrendered four hits and committed no errors.

“We are a pretty seasoned team,” Short said. “We have our corners, pitcher, catcher and shortstop are all seniors. We are going to be senior solid this year.”

The Lady Tigers’ runs came at the hand of Stillwater’s junior pitcher Allie Reese, who threw two wild pitches with the bases loaded in the fourth inning. Cushing led off the inning with a single and benefited from three walks.

Reese pitched the first four innings allowing two runs, three hits and four walks. Senior Brittney Lockett pitched the final two innings and only allowed a hit.

“We are still trying to work out our pitching rotation,” Davis said. “They both threw really well. We still got to find that pitcher that can throw seven innings.”

Sophomore Hallie Randolph had a strong game defensively at catcher, throwing out two Cushing baserunners attempting to steal. Randolph was also solid batting, hitting a double and reaching base on a walk.

Short said his team did well in putting the ball in play.

“That’s the name of the game in softball,” Short said. “I don’t think we had anybody strike out today. That’s a critical thing. If you aren’t striking out, you are putting the bat on the ball.”

Megan Carrier pitched for the Lady Tigers and only gave up a run in the sixth inning. Carrier struck out five Lady Pioneers and only walked one.

Stillwater’s only run came in the last inning when Maty Warlick doubled to center to drive in Lexy McCoy, who led off with a double.

Carrier successfully worked out of jams. In the second, Carrier surrendered a leadoff double to Randolph, but stranded her on third. In the bottom of the sixth, Carrier left the tying run at third.

The Lady Pioneers open the season at home against Putnam City West on Thursday.

“I think we are ready,” Davis said. “I think we worked out most of our kinks. We still got three full days of practice next week to work out any last minute things we need to work out.”
