Top-ranked Pioneers topple Tigers

CUSHING, Okla. — Class 6A No. 1 ranked Stillwater traveled to Class 4A No. 2 ranked Cushing Tuesday night. The Pioneer wrestlers pulled ahead late and won 46-24.

Even though Stillwater won by 22, the Pioneers could have wrestled better.

“We didn’t wrestle real well. We’re at the point now where we’re getting everybody's best match and there was no exception there,” Stillwater coach Doug Chesbro said. “(Cushing) wrestled hard and wrestled well and we weren’t quite ready.”

Andrew Nieman won his match win a pin in 42 seconds.

Kaid Brock also got a fall with 57 seconds left in the second period.

Tristan Moran earned a fall in 1:16.

Chase Lane won his match by decision.

Joe Smith earned a fall in the second period.

Jordan Dieringer won by major decision.

Cyntrell Carden earned a win by decision.

Heavyweight James Brower picked up a win by means of a pin.

Stillwater bumped up to 11-0 in duals this year.

“I’m not real pleased with the overall effort but a wins a win and you have to take what you can get and move on,” Chesbro said.

Stillwater came in ranked as the No. 1 team in Class 6A when the week six rankings came out on Monday. While the Pioneers are happy with the rankings the end goal is to be No. 1 at the end of the season.

“As of right now all being No. 1 is put a target on your back. There’s nowhere to go but down,” Chesbro said. “We have a lot of proving to do and I think we’ll be up for the task.”
