Pioneers pound Deer-Creek Edmond to snap losing streak

EDMOND, Okla. —  After coming up empty in their home invitational, the Stillwater Pioneers were hoping to return to the win column. Monday in Edmond, the Pioneers did just that as they struck early in a 6-3 victory over the Deer Creek Edmond Antlers.

“I had 20 players and got 18 into the game,” Stillwater coach Tony Holt said. “It was a great team victory. Everyone that pinch hit and pinch ran had a solid performance.”

Junior Jon Littell got the scoring started for Stillwater as he hit a two-run home run to right scoring senior Nathan Joliff. In the second inning, Littell hit a RBI single to right, scoring junior Ryan Hoecker. Littell drove in a third run on a ground out in the sixth. Littell went 2 for 3. Junior Carson Teel drove in the other runs with a single.

“(Littell) killed the ball,” Holt said. “He had a two-run home run, a double and a sacrifice fly. We all know he is talented and can have this type of game any time. He played shortstop a little bit and did well.”

The Antlers got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single by Alex Forget. Dylan Rycroft hit a RBI single in the fifth and Cole Lindley hit a RBI single in the sixth.

The Pioneers used seven pitchers, each pitching one inning. Senior Trevor Wilson and junior Michael Higgins and sophomores Will Fowler and T.J. Black didn’t give up a run and combined for three strikeouts. Fowler earned the victory and Higgins earned the save.

“We have two tough games with Broken Arrow coming up and wanted to give some people some work,” Holt said. “We were able to do that without burning anyone out.”

Patton Collie started for the Antlers and pitched the first two innings and gave up three runs in a losing effort.

The Pioneers (14-9) return home Thursday and face the Broken Arrow Tigers, which are ranked fourth in Class 6A at 5 p.m.

“We got some big games ahead,” Holt said. “We play the team that’s ahead of us (Owasso) and if we beat them, we control our destiny. We will have to play well (against Broken Arrow). We are certainly capable of doing it.”
