Reed helps Pioneers keep opponents off the scoreboard

STILLWATER, Okla. — One of the most important positions in soccer is the goalkeeper. Just as important are the four players, who also have duties to protect the net — the defenders. Stillwater sophomore Bryson Reed has played a key role in keeping opponents off the scoreboard.

“We work on defense a lot,” Reed said. “I’ve never played defense. Coming out here and shutting guys down is what (Coach Seth Condley) likes to see. This is what I want to do now.”

Reed has helped the Pioneers to three shutout victories and three games that Stillwater only allowed one goal. The sophomore defender said the defense has come together.

“Early in the season, we didn’t know who our starting players were,” Reed said. “Once we figured out who was going to play what, our chemistry started improving.”

Last season, the Pioneers struggled to win close games. This season, Stillwater is 4-2 in games decided by two goals or fewer. Reed said they are a better team this season.

“I feel like we have more talent this year than last year,” Reed said. “There’s more to come.”

Friday against the Enid Plainsmen, Reed came up big, as he turned away an Enid scoring chance and scored a goal from 30 yards to clinch the game for Stillwater. Entering next Friday’s game at Bixby, the Pioneers hold the last playoff spot. Condley said Reed came up big Friday.

“For us to get that goal three to four minutes (after Enid scored) was big,” Condley said. “That was a difference. (Enid) had some chances at the end and they just missed.”

Reed is hoping for a strong finish.

“We are here to win and we will see what we are going to try to do,” he said.
