Stillwater High boys golf hosts regional Monday

STILLWATER, Okla. — There is a chance the Stillwater High boys golf team could spend the next two weeks getting to play postseason golf without even having to leave Stillwater.

The Pioneers will host a Class 6A golf regional event Monday at Lakeside Golf Course, with qualifiers getting the opportunity to compete in the state tournament a week later at Karsten Creek.

“They’ve been working pretty hard for that chance,” SHS boys golf coach Larry Hesler said. “We were out of school (Friday) and had a practice with everybody who could show up, so they’ve been putting in the work toward it.”

In order for the Stillwater High boys to duplicate that of the girls golf team with a trip to the Class 6A state tournament, the Pioneers must finish as one of the top six teams of the 17 participating.

“I can’t think of more of an advantage at all because we play on that course every day and a lot of us have played it for as long as we’ve played golf,” senior Troy Fort said following the State Preview event at Karsten Creek two weeks ago. “If that’s not a home advantage, I’m not sure what is.”

Last year, however, the SHS boys failed to qualify as a team on their home course though Fort earned a spot as an individual competitor. Hesler said that has been motivation for his golfers heading into the regional tournament.

“This group is pretty focused right now. I don’t think their taking anything for granted,” the SHS coach said. “They know they’ve got some strong teams there with them, so they know they’ve got to work hard Monday.”

The Pioneers will tee off at 8 a.m., in foursomes with other teams competing. Stillwater’s golfers will start their round from No. 10.
