STILLWATER, Okla. —
The final scores were slightly different, but the meaning was still true when “Just like football!” was chanted by the Stillwater High student section — which included several members of the Pioneer football team — at the end of Tuesday’s contest against Enid.
The SHS boy’s basketball walked away with a 68-41 victory — still fairly close to the football final of 52-28 in Enid in week eight this year.
“That was great to hear because last year, Bixby’s fans started doing that us,” said SHS junior Tyler Holcomb, who was a member of the football squad as a sophomore. “It’s just a good feeling that we bring momentum into this place now because sometimes we haven’t had it.”
The Pioneers were carrying in plenty of momentum — a five-game winning streak since a season-opening loss to top five team Edmond Santa Fe — with a three-game sweep at the Bixby Tournament.
“We were just piggy-backing off of what we did at the Bixby Tournament,” SHS coach Michael Davis said. “They guys are playing together and just playing great right now.”
The Plainsmen kept the contest close early, as Stillwater led just 13-10 after the opening quarter. But as was the case for most of the night, the Pioneers put together a run and pushed out to a 30-17 halftime lead on the back of a 12-2 run to start the quarter.
Stillwater went on a 13-0 run to start the fourth quarter to all but crush any attempt of an Enid rally as the Pioneers push their lead out to 61-35.
By game’s end, Stillwater had eight players score with half of them finishing in double digits. Holcomb paced the Pioneers with 18 points, followed by Rico Thompson and Dylan Murrell scored 12 points each while Jon Littell chipped in with 11.
