Frontier girls win rubber match against Pawnee

RED ROCK, Okla. — The Frontier Lady Mustangs and the Pawnee Lady Black Bears met for the third time in two weeks with each team getting a victory in the previous two. Monday at Frontier High School, it was the Lady Mustangs’ defense and outside shooting that carried them to a 57-43 victory.

Frontier (14-5) led 28-25 at halftime. The third quarter was back-and-forth until the Lady Mustangs’ heated up from 3-point territory. Bethany Childs drained two 3-pointers and Sydney Pappan hit one to help Frontier pull out to a 43-32 lead.

“Our two little shooters Sydney Pappan and Beth Childs (each) made 4 3-pointers and that’s 24 points,” Frontier coach Clay Stephens said. “Then you try to guard them, they are going to throw the ball to Marissa, our post player.”

Junior post Marissa Goodman led the Lady Mustangs in scoring with 18. She scored 13 in the second half after only scoring five in the first. Childs followed with 14 after only scoring three in the first half. Pappan also recorded double digits with 11.

“We are going to take the first shot that we get,” Stephens said. “It kind of goes in spurts — We will miss several shots then we will make three in a row. ... We had three girls in double figures and that’s always a plus.”

Stephens said having Jalissa Gum improve as she recovers from an arm injury helped open up Childs for shots.

“(Gum) speeds the game up. Other teams try to press her and it doesn’t really bother her,” Stephens said. “It lets Beth be more of a shooter for us then handle the ball as much.”

Pawnee coach Jeff Tatum said Gum, who missed the previous two meetings made a difference in Frontier’s lineup.

“She makes a lot of difference in their transition game,” Tatum said. “We had a couple girls get in foul trouble and had to sit a little bit. It made a difference in what we did.”

The Lady Black Bears (9-4) trailed by as many as 19 in the second half and were down by double digits the rest of the way.

“It wasn’t the outcome we were looking for,” Tatum said. “We battled in the first half to make it a close game. They just jumped on us in the third quarter.”

Early in the game, Pawnee’s 3-point shooting helped it stay with Frontier in the first half. The Lady Black Bears made 7 3-pointers, which helped trim a 25-16 Lady Mustang lead to three. Natalie Jensen hit four threes, scoring 14 of her 20 points in the first half.

“We had several good looks and knocked down some shots,” Tatum said. “If we pass the ball around and take those good looks, we have the opportunity to knock them down. Frontier made their shots. They just outworked us for 32 minutes.”

Both the Lady Mustangs and Lady Black Bears are competing in the NOC Tournament starting Thursday.
