Lady Demons demolish Stroud in 66 Conference Tournament

PERKINS, Okla. —  The Stroud Lady Tigers had no answer for Perkins-Tryon senior post Jordan Gorham, who scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in a 58-33 Lady Demons’ victory in the semifinals of the Conference 66 Tournament.

“She’s hard to stop on the boards and gets good position with her body,” coach Jerry Burnett said. “She and McKenzie (Stanford) hit the boards hard.”

Gorham said she isn’t satisfied no matter what numbers she puts up.

“It was pretty good but there is a lot to work on,” Gorham said. “There are always things I pick out that I did wrong and work on them in practice. I could have done better at blocking out and keeping my hands straight up, so I wouldn’t have gotten four fouls.”

In the first quarter alone, Gorham scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Most of her rebounds were on the offensive end. The senior said she just works hard in practice to be in the right position.

“Coach (Jim) Hill is one of our personal body bags that we work on,” Gorham said. “Our coaches make us work hard enough that we can push back 220-pound girls.”

Stroud struggled to get shots as Perkins-Tryon took the ball away on several occasions. The Lady Tigers had seven turnovers in the first quarter and didn’t score until half-way through the quarter. The Lady Demons scored the first nine points of the game and led 21-11 after the first quarter.

“That’s what we hang our hat on, is defense,” Burnett said. “We’ve been holding people under 25 points per game. ... We work hard on defense.”

“I think our defense has progressively gotten better every game,” Gorham said. “When we are working together as a team and clicking on the court, we play better on offense and defense.”

The Lady Tigers’ scoring struggles continued in the second, as they didn’t score until 4:05 left in the quarter. The Lady Demons got an outside game going as they hit three 3-pointers. Stanford hit one and senior Siara Breeden made two. P-T led by as many as 21 in the first half, holding a 34-17 halftime lead.

The Lady Demons (17-0) ended all hopes of a second half comeback as they didn’t allow the Lady Tigers to score a field goal in the third quarter.

Besides Gorham, Stanford had a strong game offensively with 14 points. Erin Riley led Stroud in scoring with 12. The Lady Demons will play Prague for the championship at 6 p.m. Saturday.

“They are ranked in the top 10 of Class 3A,” Burnett said. “They are well coached and tough to play. It will be a good matchup for us.”
