Lady Pioneers fall to 5A's top team Shawnee in title game

SHAWNEE, Okla. — The Stillwater High Lady Pioneers failed to keep up the pace against Class 5A’s top-ranked team Shawnee, falling 51-18, losing the championship game of the Shawnee Invitational.

After falling behind 9-1 in the first quarter, the Lady Pioneers (11-7) were able to tie it up at 9 during the second quarter but the momentum stopped there.

Stillwater coach Carl Treat said his team played well during the first half but didn’t execute in the second.

Scoring was low for Stillwater. The Lady Pioneers were outscored by 14 points in the third quarter. Lauren Stettnisch led the team with 6 points, followed by Kayla Klaus with 5.

“We weren’t able to function like we needed to on offense,” Treat said.

Senior Austyn Iven, who contributed 4 points, earned all-tournament team honors.

Treat said the loss showed the Lady Pioneers’ weak areas, like trying to stop Shawnee senior Micaela Yu who earned 16 points for the Lady Wolves.

“Shawnee showed us some things we need to work on for the playoffs,” Treat said.

Stillwater is off until Friday when it will face Bishop McGuinness at 6:30 p.m. in the homecoming game.

Stillwater 57, Coweta 44

SHAWNEE — Rico Thompson scored 21 points and pulled down 9 rebounds as the Stillwater High School boys basketball team beat Class 5A No. 3 Coweta 57-44 Saturday for third place in the Shawnee Invitational.

“We needed to bounce back,” Stillwater coach Michael Davis said. “We had our eight-game winning streak snapped (Friday) and we have to move on. Now we’ve got a one-game streak going.”

Freshman Jordan Brown added 12 points for the Pioneers (14-4), who used a 13-8 run in through the second quarter to take a 32-24 lead. Brett Budke also tallied 8 points.

Rico Thompson earned all-tournament team honors for the Pioneers, who will be off until Friday’s homecoming contest against Class 5A No. 1 Bishop McGuinness.
