Pioneer Playday receives a lot of support

STILLWATER, Okla. — After Stillwater High won three state championships during the 2013-14 athletic season there was an excitement in the air for next season. That was evident Friday at the Stillwater Country Club during SHS’ 24th Pioneer Playday.

“When I talk with people who have association with the high school, they are excited about what is going on with athletics,” said Tucker Barnard, athletic director and football coach. “We have some great kids here, great coaches and parents for the program.”

The morning started with a fun run and was followed with two golf tournaments that had a combined 39 teams. Barnard said the weather helped make it a great day to be playing.

“I was fortunate to play in the little cooler weather this morning,” Barnard said. “Now we have a great day outside. The wind has stayed down. ... It’s been a great day for golf and all the other stuff going on.”

The afternoon was highlighted by a fashion show which the SHS cheerleaders and pom squad members put on — modeling clothes from Chris’ University Spirit, Wooden Nickel, Duprees and the University Store on the Oklahoma State campus. Carolyn Walstad, cheerleading coach and event organizer said the show was a success.

“I’m very pleased to have the businesses to support it,” Walstad said. “With the price of admission ($20), the amount in discounts you receive makes up for it. It gives you the opportunity to come out and enjoy the Stillwater Country Club.”

There was also a silent auction with items ranging from gift cards to local restaurants to autographed items by Stillwater and Oklahoma State University greats. Walstad said it’s amazing the support the event received.

“It’s always amazing how the Stillwater businesses surprise me and make me very happy for their genorositiy,” Walstad said. “They understand the big picture. Stillwater Public Schools is strapped financially and this is a way that they can contribute and support the Pioneer athletes.”

The support didn’t come from Stillwater alone. People in surrounding communities including Morrison High School softball and baseball coach Tim Hatter participated.

“It’s a neat event that brings a lot of people in,” Barnard said. “The superintendent from Perry was here. Just some area guys that have connections with different people in this community and come out and participate in a fun day.”

Barnard said Pioneer Playday is a big part of the funding for the booster club which in turn helps the athletic department.

“All this money that is being raised today and through the membership drive later goes to funding athletics,” Barnard said. “... It’s a great situation for us. We are thankful to the Country Club for letting us have it out here.”

Now, the success of the Pioneers and Lady Pioneers athletic teams may be up in the air for the 2014-15 campaign but there is no question in the amount of support.

“Stillwater Public Schools is a great school system,” Walstad said. “Being an athlete is just an added benefit.”
