AGRA, Okla. — AGRA — On Tuesday, Glencoe lost 62-39 to Agra.
For most of the opening quarter, Agra appeared to be on its way to the district championship as they opened a 10-2 lead on Saturday.
Instead, Glencoe switched up its defense, and held off Agra, 45-41in overtime to win the Class B, Area III, District 5 Championship. A year ago, Glencoe finished with six wins. Both Agra and Glencoe advanced to the regional tournament.
“What changed was our attitude,” Glencoe coach Chad Speer said. “The last time we played, they just out worked us and out hustled us. I told the girls that if they didn’t match their intensity, that they were going to whoop us again.”
In the previous loss, Glencoe’s man defense worked against them in the double-digit loss to Agra. For this game, the Panthers switched to a zone defense that gave the Bearcats trouble the whole night.
Agra’s 10-2 start was its largest lead of the game.
“We were doing little stupid things,” Speer said. “If we stop doing those and do the things the we know how to do, then we’ll be fine. I had to chew on them a little a bit, but I got them to do what they can always do. I’m just proud of them.
From that point, Agra struggled making outside shots. Agra was held under 10 points in the third, fourth and overtime periods.
Dominque King was the only player in double-figures for Agra, scoring a game-high 21 points.
“We didn’t do a lot of things offensively. Defense-wise, we did what we needed to,” Agra coach Jon Peveler said.
JayLynn Jeffrey led Glencoe with 14 points. It was her clutch free throws in overtime that sealed the win for the Panthers. She went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in overtime.
“In practice, we run for each miss, so that puts us in a pressure situation, so we’re ready for it in a game,” Jeffrey said. “I don’t like to run.”
