Leadership, shooting key

STILLWATER, Okla. — Coyle point guard Tyra Aska comes from an athletic family. Her older brother Tony played a key role in the Bluejackets’ run to the Class B state title game and her older sister Taren has been her teammate the last two seasons.

This season, Tyra’s scoring and leadership have played a key role in the Lady Bluejackets’ success.

Tony Aska started at post for the Bluejackets and was one of the leading scorers and rebounders on last season’s team. Currently, Tony is playing basketball at Redlands Community College. Tyra said she looks up to her older brother.

“He’s my role model,” she said. “When he comes to my games, his voice is the loudest. He just makes me better at my game.”

Taren, who is a senior on this season’s team, starts at post and is often on the floor with Tyra, who said she enjoys playing with her older sister — adding they’ve developed a good chemistry.

“We always go out and play our hardest,” Aska said. “We always have good chemistry. We never fight. Most of the time we know where each other is at on the court.”

In the past two games, Aska has been the spark in the Lady Bluejackets’ offense. On Tuesday against Oilton, she outscored the Lady Panthers with 20 points to their 14. On Friday, she scored 18 points to help Coyle defeat Agra 46-35. Being the leader on the floor is something, Aska embraces.

“It makes me happy,” Aska said. “I’m a captain on the team. I know I have to show leadership. I contribute to the team.”

One of the key strengths for Aska is her pure speed, which not only helps on the offensive end but on defense.

“I can play close to the person I’m guarding,” Aska said. “I know I can keep up with them.”

The Lady Bluejackets beat Carney 67-20 and moved to 10-4 and finished second in the Frontier Shootout and the Mulhall-Orlando Invitational. One of the keys to Coyle’s success has been their team defense. Aska said that starts with their preparation.

“We work hard in practice and play well together as a team,” Aska said.
