PERRY, Okla. — PERRY — After Tuesday’s dual against Bartlesville, Stillwater coach Doug Chesbro said he thought having five semifinalists would be a good number in the Perry Tournament of Champions.

Chesbro got that and more Friday as seven Pioneers earned a berth in the semifinals Saturday at Perry High School’s John Divine Hall.

“That’s surprising to me,” Chesbro said. “Half of your team is going to place in the top six. That’s a good thing. I got some kids I hope come through the backside.”

Kennedy Monday won both of his matches by fall to advance to the 106-pound weight class semifinals. In Monday’s second match, he recorded a pin in 42 seconds. He will wrestle Choctaw’s Garrett Rowe on Saturday morning.

Kaid Brock had a bye in the first round of the 113-pound weight class bracket. Brock won his second-round match by technical fall, 20-4, over Choctaw’s Tyler Rhodes. Brock will wrestle Claremore’s Cody Williams in the semifinals.

The Pioneers had a pair of wrestlers advance to the semifinals in the 120-weight class. Mason Mefford won his first match in a 12-7 decision over Lamar’s Joseph Aguon. Mefford won his second match 4-2 over Harrah’s Ryan Rutherford. Mefford said he was nervous.

“I was just happy I won,” Mefford said. “The first match could have gone either way. The first match I didn’t stop moving till he blew a whistle. In the second match (Rutherford) was posting on me. I ducked and did a one-double (takedown).”

Mefford will take on Yukon’s Boo Lewallen in the semifinals on Saturday. Chesbro said Mefford wrestled well.

“Mason is kind of a sneaker,” Chesbro said. “Nobody knows about him because he’s been behind those guys like Joe (Smith), Benny (Teegarden) and King. When he gets the opportunity to step out, he does a great job.”

King Williams advanced to the semifinals with two victories by decision. In the second round he beat Perry’s Tevin Williams 7-2 and beat Marco Perez 4-2 in overtime. Williams will face off with Ponca City’s Caleb Burns.

Teegarden advanced to the semifinals on two victories by fall over Woodward’s Ryan Waggoner and Woodward’s Trevyn DeLong. Teegarden will go against Locust Grove’s Austin Johnson.

Smith’s match ended just as quickly as it started. In just 38 seconds, Smith earned a victory by fall over Randall Biddle of Ark City, Kan. Smith will face Dakota Simerly of Locust Grove.

In the 145-pound weight class Beau Bigheart won two matches by decision to advance to the semifinals. The senior opened with a 4-1 victory over Bradyn Meyer and followed with a 10-1 major decision over Perry’s Andrew Herod. Bigheart will face Perry’s Colton Looper in the semifinals.

Looper had no problems in his only match, pinning Midwest City’s Jeremy Immel in just 44 seconds.

“It was because of having good conditioning and pushing the pace,” Looper said. “I just stayed in good position.”

Perry coach Ronnie Delk said Looper did well.

“He’s going to be all right,” Delk said. “I was really pleased with him.”

Stillwater’s Pete Pickens advanced to the 182-pound weight class semifinals with a victory by fall over Midwest City’s Trevonne Rucker. Chesbro said his upper weights are improving.

“We didn’t give up as many falls,” Chesbro said. “We gave up too many last night. C.J. Citizen lost overtime and we needed to win that. All and all, it’s still early in the season.”

The Maroons will have five wrestlers competing for a championship on Saturday. Dalton Revels advanced in the 106-weight class with a win by decision 11-5 over Yukon’s Xavier Hill. Austin Allen won two matches in the 152-pound weight class. His first victory was by fall over Woodward’s James Broth. In the quarterfinals, Allen beat Lamar’s Cole Ticknor 15-6 by major decision. Grant Beier won his only match by fall to advance to the 195-pound weight class. Kyle Varley advanced in the 220-pound weight class.

Delk said he is happy for those wrestlers but thought his team should have had more.

“I don’t think we nearly wrestled our best,” Delk said. “I thought we wrestled pretty sluggish. A lot of them were wrestling for the first time at weight. ... That heavyweight match we lost, we were the aggressor the whole match and they got us in the end. ... David Thomas was probably the most disappointing. I thought he should have won but he got pinned, standing around and waiting. It wasn’t a bad day but I wanted more.”

The semifinals will start at 11 a.m. and the medal round starts at 5 p.m.
