Perry’s Lindsley earns track coach of the year

STILLWATER, Okla. — Perry track coach Chad Lindsley had a young team in his first season. The Maroons and Lady Maroons youth excelled quickly as they had several state qualifiers, which led to The News Press naming Lindsley as the All-Area Track Coach of the Year.

“The kids have worked hard,” Lindsley said. “Some have been in the weight room and lifting all year. That really helped us compete.”

Freshman Kolby Mendenhall — who was the starting running back on the football team — won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. He also won those events at the Meet of Champions last month. Lindsley said Mendenhall has put in a lot of work.

“He’s a special athlete,” Lindsley said. “His parents take him to big meets across the country.”

Freshman Carley Calhoon tied senior teammate Rylee Bellmon — who qualified for a second straight season — for fifth in the high jump. Freshman Natalie Williams finished seventh in the 200-meter dash and qualified in the 100-meter dash. Sophomore Brett Schovanec qualified in the long jump and was apart of the 400-meter relay team. Perry also had junior Meagan Drake who competed for a second straight season finish third in the shot put and Dali Atchley finished 10th in the 3,200-meter run. Lindsley said he’s excited about the group he has returning next year.

“I got a great group of kids,” Lindsley said. “I have a great support system of parents and football coaches that help these kids train.”

While Lindsley had strong group of underclassmen, he’s looking forward to the ones who will put on a Maroon uniform for the first time in 2015.

“I have good class of eighth grade girls that are coming up,” Lindsley said. “It’s exciting.”
