Pioneers finish second at Sand Springs tournament

SAND SPRINGS, Okla. — The Stillwater Pioneers had seven finalist entering Saturday’s medal rounds and finished with five champions at the Sand Springs Tournament.

Andrew Nieman won the 106-pound bracket with a 5-2 decision victory. Kaid Brock (132) won 12-6 in the finals. Tristan Moran won the 138-pound weight class with a 13-3 major decision. Joe Smith won the 145-pound weight class with a 7-2 decision victory. Chandler Rogers won by fall in 1:54 to claim the 170-pound weight class. Coach Doug Chesbro said his finalist picked up big wins including against some that were higher ranked.

“Andrew Nieman wrestled one of the top kids in the state and won,” Chesbro said. “Kaid Brock picks up a win. Tristan Moran picked up the biggest win. He wrestled someone from Broken Arrow, that’s the defending state champion and dominated him by 10 points. Joe Smith wrestled down a weight class and did well.”

Jordan Dieringer fell in the 182-pound finals with a 4-2 decision loss. The Pioneers got a boost with Benny Teegarden winning third with a 10-4 decision victory. Overall Stillwater finished second by a half point. Chesbro said it’s tough coming that close but is pleased with how his wrestlers performed.

“If any would have won one more match or got a major decision, technical fall or pin we would have won,” Chesbro said. “We did a heck of a job. We entered the finals down by 17 and took the lead going into the final match.”

Broken Arrow won the tournament. The Pioneers close out their home season on Tuesday against the defending Class 3A state champion Perry Maroons for senior night.
