Top-ranked Pioneers tame No. 2 Tigers

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Earlier this month, the top-ranked Stillwater Pioneers wrestling team fell a half-point short of topping the No. 2 Broken Arrow Tigers at the Sand Springs Tournament. Tuesday night, Stillwater got more than enough points and knocked off three defending state champions in a 37-23 dual victory.

“It’s a big win for us,” coach Doug Chesbro said. “It’s a big win for the program and our kids. We’re a tough team all the way around. We pulled some upsets. We gave up some bonus points but we have someone in our lineup that goes above and beyond. Someone is always surprising us.”

The dual started at the 138-pound weight class and the Pioneers started with a bang as Tristan Moran pinned defending state champion Shea Conley. In the 120-pound weight class, Jacob Fontanez edged defending state champion Markus Simmons in overtime with a 9-7 decision. Benny Teegarden won the 126-pound bout over defending state champion Davion Jeffries 2-1.

“We were only favoured in one of those matches,” Chesbro said. “It was pretty big to come away with two victories.”

The match was back-and-forth. Stillwater took a 9-0 lead but lost by pin at 152 and by major decision at 160 to trail 10-9. Chandler Rogers and Jordan Dieringer regained the lead for the Pioneers as they got pins in the 170 and 182 bouts respectively. Broken Arrow got back within two as Cyntrell Carden was pinned and C.J. Citizen lost by decision. Stillwater won five of the final six bouts to claim the victory.

The Pioneers will compete in the Big 4 tourmament at Blackwell on Saturday.
