Worthy steps up in Shawnee Tournament

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater’s Becca Worthy was called upon to do a multitude of things during the Shawnee Tournament last Thursday through Saturday.

Stillwater’s point guard Dylan Fix suffered an ankle injury in the opening game of the Shawnee Tournament against Class 5A No. 14 Ardmore. Worthy was inserted at the point guard position and helped the Lady Pioneers to a 40-34 victory. Worthy dropped in six points in the win.

“Becca Worthy did a good job (Thursday),” Stillwater coach Clay Stephens said after the win against Ardmore.

The win over Ardmore sent SHS to the right side of the bracket for the first time this season. Stillwater lost to Class 5A No. 1 Shawnee 68-37 in the semifinals.

The Lady Pioneers squared off against Class 5A No. 6 El Reno in the third-place game of the tournament. Worthy, a Stillwater senior, dropped in 19 points en route to a 68-55 win to claim the third place trophy.

“Becca is willing to put herself out there and do some things for us that no one else really wants to do,” Stephens said after the game.

Worthy was named to the All-Tournament team following the third place win over El Reno.

“Especially since it was the last tournament of the year and my senior year I felt like it really ended well,” Worthy said.

Worthy and Fix have been splitting time running the point. Because of Fix’s ability to shoot the basketball, having Worthy at point guard will help to open Fix up and keep her from getting worn out quicker.

“At first I wasn’t real confident with it because I haven’t been a point guard in a long time. Now I think it’s working out really well,” Worthy said. “It gets Dylan open for some more shots and then when we switch it gets me open for more shots. It kind of gives us the element of surprise because they don’t know whose going to bring the ball up and what we’re going to do because we can switch it so frequently.”

The Lady Pioneers are looking towards the rest of their season positively. Stillwater still has things to work on before the regional tournament but has time to get the kinks worked out.

“We’re looking to win some more games and play hard like we did in the Shawnee Tournament. We’re looking to play well like we did there against some teams that we’re not supposed to beat to get our ranking up a little bit to get us a good seed for the playoffs,” Worthy said.
