Lady Mustangs blow out Glencoe

RED ROCK, Okla. — Some nights are just a player’s night. Thursday night belonged to Frontier’s Kristan Molina, who knocked down 11 3-pointers for 35 total points — carrying the Lady Mustangs to a 75-45 rout of the Glencoe Lady Panthers.

“I haven’t seen very many girls shoot like that in a game,” Frontier coach Bob Weckstein said.

Molina said it was exciting to do that well shooting.

“I didn’t expect to have that night,” Molina said. “I just wanted to keep shooting more and more.”

In the first quarter, Molina hit three 3-pointers and helped Frontier take an 18-3 lead. Glencoe finished the quarter on an 8-3 run. Lady Panthers coach Stephen Castlebury said his team didn’t shoot the ball well.

“That’s not a good remedy for beating someone that is pretty good,” Castlebury said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well or take care of it.”

The Lady Panthers (15-5) continued their momentum and scored the first eight points of the second quarter to pull within two. Glencoe used half court pressure to force turnovers. Weckstein said some of that was because his best player, post Marissa Goodman, was on the bench with her second foul.

“(Goodman) our middle girl, is active and wants the ball,” Weckstein said. “Once she was in the game we didn’t have any problems. When she was out of the game we had some youngsters who were a little timid and just hide and we have problems getting the ball down the middle.”

Molina hit the first of her four 3-pointers in the quarter to stop the run. All of Frontier’s points in the second were off of Molina’s threes and took a 33-27 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Lady Mustangs took advantage of Glencoe miscues and pulled away. Frontier went on a 20-0 run during the first five and a half minutes of the quarter.

“We had 10 turnovers in the third quarter alone,” Castlebury said. “That’s when they broke it open.”

Molina capped off her night with four more 3-pointers. Goodman started producing down low, scoring 14 of her 16 points in the second half.

Chelsea Lazenby led the Lady Panthers in scoring with 12 points. Jenny Baker contributed 10 off the bench. For the Lady Panthers it doesn’t get easier as they visit Tonkawa at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The Lady Mustangs host Newkirk Tuesday.
