Demons fall to No. 2 Centennial

PERKINS, Okla. — The only thing Perkins-Tryon coach Norman Tippeconnie could ask his Demons to do against the No. 2 Oklahoma Centennial Bison is play as hard as they can. P-T gave its best effort but it wasn’t quite enough in a 61-49 loss in the Class 3A regional semifinals Thursday in the Perkins-Tryon Gymnasium.

“Our effort wasn’t the problem,” Tippeconnie said. “We just got to cut down on our turnovers and play a little better on offense. My kids play hard. We played the No. 2 team in the state and gave them a good shot. They just beat us.”

The Bison started to pull away in the second quarter, going on an 8-0 run — turning a 19-17 lead into a 27-17 lead. The Demons weren’t able to find an answer for Corneilus McIver, who 15 points in the first half. Malcolm Mitchell also was strong offensively with 12 in the first half.

“They hit some tough shots,” Tippeconnie said. “McIver hit some tough shots. Mitchell hit some tough shots. There were a few shots that were contested and they still went in.”

P-T got the deficit down to as low as four but trailed 34-27 at halftime. The Demons moved within three early in the second half but Centennial went on a 6-0 run to put it back to nine points. Oklahoma Centennial held a 46-37 lead after three quarters.

The Demons (15-4) cut the deficit in half with 4:40 left. The Bison scored seven straight points for their biggest lead of the night at 55-43. Perkins-Tryon wasn’t able to get the lead down to single digits the rest of the quarter.

Thunder Sharp led P-T in scoring with 14 points. Talon Sharp followed with 10 and Travis Cotton scored eight, before fouling out. The Demons will play in the regional consolation semifinals against Oklahoma Christian Schools at 3 p.m. Friday in Perkins-Tryon Gymnasium.

“We got to get back quick on Friday,” Tippeconnie said. “We got Oklahoma Christian Schools and hopefully we can play better.”
