New Lady Pioneers coach Stephens leads first youth camp

STILLWATER, Okla. — Basketball is about having fun. That’s what girls coach Clay Stephens is trying to teach the campers at the Stillwater youth girls basketball camp this week.

Stephens said when they’re that young the most important thing is they are having a good time. The campers are also learning dribbling skills, footwork, passing and shooting.

“They're having fun but they're working a little bit,” Stephens said. “They're all a little sweaty so it’s going pretty good.”

Stephens’ goal is to make the campers want to continue playing basketball. Little kids this age have so many options, he said. He plans to teach the campers that basketball takes skill but is fun to play.

“Kind of introduce them to it, let them have fun with it, make it something that they might want to do later,” Stephens said. “That’s what we're trying to do.”

Stephens is using the same techniques with the campers he used while coaching in Frontier. The campers started out working on individual skills, progressed to team drills and then played games toward the end of the camp day.

“You know basketball is not rocket science,” Stephens said. “It’s pretty simple. It may be new to them but it’s all pretty much the same.”

Some of the high school players are assisting Stephens at the camp. They help demonstrate and coach the campers. This is giving Stephens a chance to get to know his team better.

“The high school girls I've spent a little time with this summer at different camps and things,” Stephens said.
