Stillwater High and area cross country teams prepare for OSU Jamboree

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater High school will join several other high schools from across the state at the Oklahoma State University Jamboree cross country meet on Saturday at the OSU cross country course.

The Pioneers won the Enid and Tulsa Edison meets and finished second at the Owasso Meet and fourth at the ORU meet. Zach Poterfield finished in the top 10 at Tulsa Edison, Owasso and ORU. Bo Frohock finished 10th at Tulsa Edison, eighth at Owasso and 11th at the ORU meet on Sept. 21.

The Lady Pioneers finished third at Enid, fourth at Tulsa Edison and fifth at Owasso. Top performers for the girls this season include Angela Fitch finished 11th at Enid, Catherine Petty finished 27th at Owasso and Elise Rackley and Petty tied for the best time among Stillwater runners at 14:40. In their last meet at the Stillwater 5K on Sept. 21, Petty was the fourth overall female with a time of 22:21 Fitch finished fifth overall at 22:30.

Perry is bringing both of its teams. Coach Ron Dwyer said he likes the meet because of the competitiveness.

“It’s tough,” Dwyer said. “It’s a combination of classes. We are going to see tough competition. I want my teams to focus on getting their times down as we get closer to the state tournament.”

Dwyer said the terrain is challenging especially the large slope at the beginning of the race.

“It’s a challenge because the start is always a sprint,” Dwyer said. “You have to save enough energy for the rest of the race.”

The Lady Maroons qualified for state last year and are using this race to get ready for another run. Frontier will also be competing. Stillwater coach Dan Zeroski and Frontier coach Corrin Auld did not return the NewsPress’ calls for comment.
