Lady Tigers look to advance to Class 4A softball regionals

CUSHING, Okla. — Last season the Cushing Lady Tigers were so close to clinching a berth in the state softball tournament. Thursday, Cushing hopes to get a step closer as it hopes to secure a spot in the Class 4A regional tournament with a district series win over Will Rogers in Cushing.

The first game is at 1 p.m. and the second will follow. If both teams are tied then the final game will be played at 1 p.m. Friday. The Lady Tigers haven’t faced Will Rogers. Coach Chad Short thinks his team is ready.

“We don’t know a lot about them,” Short said. “We started the season strong, hit a slump but bounced back. We picked up the pace and I think as long as we play well we should have a chance at going back to regionals.”

The Lady Tigers (18-13) started the season 11-1 but lost 12 of their next 19. Short said some of those struggles was his young team growing up especially since most of those losses were against ranked teams.

“At times we’ve struggled with our confidence,” Short said. “Out of my six infielders only one is a returning starter. I’m proud of my team, they fought through it.”

Coach said it will take a team effort to advance but is really pleased with the production he’s gotten from rightfielder Kayley Walters and defensively his pitchers.

“(Walters) is hitting the ball pretty good,” Short said. “Defensively we’ve been sporadic. My pitching trio of Josie Hood, Mindy Compton and Hailea Johnson has been keeping us in games.”
