Cushing High wrestling team travels to New Orleans

STILLWATER, Okla. — Every other year Cushing allows its athletic squads to compete out of state. The Tigers wrestling team will get a chance to face some of the best wrestling teams in the country, when it goes to New Orleans for the Trey Colutta Invitational.

“We’re excited for the opportunity,” coach Chad Short said. “There is not a lot of pressure because we don’t know them and they don’t know us. If someone beats us it’s not a big deal.”

Short said five of the top 10 Louisiana high schools will compete along with one of the top wrestling programs in Texas and Alabama. The Tigers will leave on Thursday and get straight to work when they arrive.

“We will be traveling in excursions provided by the district,” Short said. “When we get there we will work out that night. On Friday everyone wrestles five matches and then are put into a bracket on Saturday.”

Cushing will be staying in the French Quarter Thursday and Friday night. The team will start home after the tournament. Austin Walsh (113), defending state champion Daniel Hood (120), Blake Burden (126), Mason Roberts (138), and Trevor Hubble at 220 won their bracket at the Bristow Tournament. Short said this tournament will help his prepare his team for the second semester and postseason.

“We have our tournament coming up and it’s one of the toughest in the state,” Short said. “It will definitely prepare us for that.”

Cushing hosts its tournament on Jan. 3 and 4 after it hosts Bristow for a dual on Jan. 2.
