Teegarden taming competition on mat

STILLWATER, Okla. — Benny Teegarden was not excited about his performance in Stillwater’s home opener against Sapulpa. Teegarden won his match at 126 pounds 7-2 but felt that he could do better. His feelings were right.

Teegarden then went to the Perry Tournament of Champions  Friday and Saturday and went a perfect 4-0. Teegarden won his first three matches by fall, technical fall and decision.

“I had an OK match on Thursday night against Sapulpa. I was dissapointed with a few things and was ready to go to the Perry Tournament,” Teegarden said. “The whole tournament was well-rounded for me. I was pretty happy with my performance.”

Teegarden found himself in the finals against a former state champion from Yukon in Boo Lewallen. Teegarden rose to the occassion and beat Lewallen by fall in 5:30. Teegarden won his weight class and helped the Pioneers to a team title as well.

“In the finals I never lost confidence during that match,” Teegarden said. “I just kept wrestling and towards the end it went my way. It was a pretty good win. It felt good.”

Teegarden was not done. The senior wrestler from Stillwater also won his match in the No. 2 ranked Pioneer’s dual at Blackwell on Tuesday 10-2. Teegarden won his match at Blackwell at weight class 132.

“It was a good match,” Teegarden said.

Teegarden’s performance earned him the Stillwater NewsPress Stillwater Athlete of the Week.

“The kids have a different mentality right now. They are starting to have some confidence in themselves,” Stillwater coach Doug Chesbro said.

The Stillwater wrestling room has seen some changes recently. The effort is certainly one of the things that is different.

“The kids are trying to win. They are really, really doing what it takes to be successful. So far it’s coming true,” Chesbro said.
