Stillwater High sweeps home opener against Southeast

STILLWATER, Okla. — The home opener went just about as perfect as it could.

Stillwater hosted Southeast in its first home game of the season on Friday night. The Pioneers paced themselves to an 88-71 win on their home court.

“I thought we played what we’ve been building on, unselfish basketball,” Stillwater coach Michael Davis said.

Carson Teel led the Pioneers with 26 points in the win. Brett Budke drained in 24, Jordan Brown dropped in 14 and Jake Green scored 10 points. The balance helped the Pioneers’ offense.

“Those guys were making the extra effort. We’ve got to have different guys do different things on different nights,” Davis said.

Green added 11 assists while having just one turnover.

“I thought Jake Green played a heckuva game. They kept knocking him around. For a sophomore he kept his composure and played really well,” Davis said.

Stillwater had just nine turnovers in the win. The Pioneers forced Southeast to give up the ball 21 times.

The night wound up just about exactly how the Pioneers had envisioned.

“I’m very proud of our guys and proud of our fans. People came out and supported us even though it’s bad weather,” Davis said.

The Pioneers jumped out on the Spartans quick. Stillwater had a 25-16 lead after the first quarter and held onto a 45-25 lead at intermission.

Southeast’s Dashawn McDowell poured in 28 and teammate Jashawn Talton chipped in 26 points in the losing cause.

“Am I satisfied with our defense? No way. Over Christmas break that is going to be a priority,” Davis said.

GIRLS

The atmosphere must have been too much for Southeast in Stillwater on Friday night.

The Stillwater girls romped the Lady Spartans, dropping a 72-40 victory in the Lady Pioneers’ home opener.

“We shot the ball pretty well,” Stillwater coach Clay Stephens said.

Lauren Stettnisch led the way with 16 points. Stettnisch’s presence in the paint helped to open up her teammates around the perimeter.

“We need (Stettnisch) to score points for us in the paint so we can shoot those outside shots that we all like to shoot,” Stephens said.

Becca Worthy dropped in 15 and Dylan Fix scored 12 points in the win.

The three combined to score 43 points.

The Lady Pioneers came out of the gates swinging. Stillwater held an 8-0 at the beginning of the game. Worthy hit a long 3-pointer with 2:15 in the first quarter. Stillwater was able to hold and extend the lead. The Lady Pioneers took a 40-11 lead into the break.

Stephens experienced something new — a game in Stillwater.

“It’s always nice to win your first home game,” Stephens said.

The Lady Pioneers allowed 40 points but feel that Southeast has had troubles on offense.

“If they shot 25 percent I’d be surprised. I don’t know how much of that was our defense or their lack of shooting ability,” Stephens said.

Stillwater moved to 3-4 on the season while Southeast fell to 0-3.

Stillwater still has room for improvement. The Lady Pioneers are steadily getting stronger as a unit.

“We have a lot to improve on. We are better than when we started but we still have a lot of things to work on,” Stephens said.
