Ripley gets 54-37 victory over Carney

CARNEY, Okla. — For the Carney Lady Bulldogs to compete with the No. 9 Ripley Lady Warriors, they needed to play a near perfect game. That’s exactly what they didn’t get as turnovers put them in an early hole in a 54-37 loss Saturday.

“(Ripley) is good and everything,” Carney coach Jack Brewster said. “We have a long ways to go. We’re young. It’s growing pains.

The Lady Bulldogs (2-6) turned the ball over eight times in the first quarter and didn’t make a basket until the final minute of the first quarter.

The Lady Warriors (7-2), jumped out to a 14-0 lead. Most of their scoring was from 3-point territory as they hit seven in the first half.  Sheridan Richards was Ripley’s offensive force with 12 points on four 3-pointers. Ripley led 38-13 at halftime.

“We shot it well,” Ripley coach Doug Scott said. “I tried to get some of the younger players out there in the second half. It was a good win. This was our third game in three days. I’m glad we shot the ball well on the third day.”

Carney’s offense got going in the second half as Ripley went deep in its bench. The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Warriors 24-16 in the second half. Jaylee Graham led Carney’s offense with 12 points. Kaitlyn Bailey also scored in double figures with 10.

Leading Ripley’s offense in the second half was Jaclyn Sturgeon, who scored 11 points. Richards was the leading scorer with 12. Eight players scored for the Lady Warriors.

“(Sturgeon) played well on offense but she did a really good job on defense,” Scott said. “She was all over the place defensively. (Richardson) shot the ball well. It’s a different person every night. Our girls work together really good.”

Carney resumes its season at home against Oilton on Jan. 7. Ripley hosts the Walking F. Classic Tournament on Jan. 9.

CARNEY — The Ripley Warriors took control of the game midway through the second quarter in a 52-28 rout of the Carney Bulldogs.

“We didn’t play well until about four minutes left in that second quarter,” Scott said. “We started doing what we wanted to do — being patient and working the ball. Defense kept us where we weren’t doing well. Once we started doing that we broke it open.”

During the first quarter and most of the second it was back and forth. The Warriors led 10-7 after the first quarter but Carney took advantage of a pair of Ripley turnovers and took a 12-10 lead on baskets by Ty Wiseman. That’s when the game changed.

Ripley’s post Houston Twoguns hit a second-chance basket. Noah Teel and Trevor Watts each hit 3-pointers. The baskets would spark a 22-0 run that carried over into the third quarter. Twoguns scored seven of his 16 points in the third. Teel hit four of his six 3-pointers in the same quarter.

“Houston would score inside,” Scott said. “When they covered him up, we would get open shots. That’s what we want our offense to be — inside presence, outside presence. I thought Houston and Noah did a good job.”

Brewster said his team needed to do a better job of running the offense.

“They got to learn to do that,” Brewster said. “If they don’t they end up with what they got. It’s something we got to work on and keep trying to fix the problem.”

Teel led all scorers with 18 points. Alex Perry led Carney in scoring with 12 points. Carney only suited up six players as it had a couple out with injury. Keith Knox fouled out in the middle of the fourth leaving Carney with five the rest of the game.

The Warriors (5-4) won their fourth straight game entering Christmas break.

“This is a confidence builder going into break,” Scott said. “This is a good win for them.”
