Teel tormenting opponents with high shooting percentage

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater senior guard Carson Teel not only led the way in the Pioneer’s home opener but shot out of the gates on a mission.

Teel ended the game with 26 points in SHS’ win over Southeast on Dec. 20. The senior went 11 of 16 and 3 for 6 at the line. Teel had 20 points in the first 16 minutes and missed just one shot during the first half. Teel’s performance earned him Stillwater NewsPress Stillwater Athlete of the Week.

“It was nice. My teammates trusted me with every shot I took and I delivered for them. It was fun that night, all of us going out there and playing hard and all scored a lot,” Teel said.

Teel knew the night had just started when he put up his first couple of shots.

“The first two went down and I felt like it would be a promising night for me and they just kept falling,” Teel said.

The Pioneers are 5-2 while on Christmas break. Stillwater looks to use the time off to work on some aspects of the game.

“I think that right now we probably should be 6-1 but we’re not. That’s what coach (Davis) has been telling us in practice. We messed up but we can’t really afford to mess up anymore as the year goes on becuase games start becoming more important the farther you go down the year,” Teel said.

The two and a half week break sounds like something players will use to relax. Instead, the Stillwater Pioneers will look to get stronger and to work harder during the time off from games.

“We’ve got to build on what we have and continue to get better,” Teel said.

When the time off is over, the Pioneers will not have another extended time off for quite some time. Stillwater will go to Class 5A’s No. 3 Bishop McGuinness Jan. 7, and then the Pioneers will compete in the East Central OK Classic in Ada beginning Jan. 9.

“A lot of the guys are just ready to get back on the court and start playing some other people. We’ve got to get some things done in practice first before we get out there,” Teel said.

Stilwater was ranked as Class 6A’s  No. 16 going into the game against Southeast. The Pioneer’s 88-71 victory gave SHS a push to No. 12.

“It’s a nice little jump there, always getting better,” Teel said. “Going up four spots is big. We just need to continue to climb up on the scale. It doesn’t matter where we are now though. It all depends on if we’re No. 1 at the end of the year and that’s our No. 1 goal.”

Teel is one of a handful of seniors of the Pioneer’s squad. Teel is a captain.

“Carson is our leader ... This kid has gotten better every year. From his sophomore year to now. There’s no quit in him. If he can’t score he does other things,” Stillwater coach Michael Davis said.

Teel has averaged 22 points a game, close to five assists and five rebounds a game.

“(Teel’s) made himself into what he is,” Davis said. “(Teel’s) all about the team. Not himself. When you put the team before yourself good things happen to you.”

Teel shows his leadership on the court. Instead of being too vocal he leads by example. The Pioneer senior shows his leadership off of the court as well.

“(Teel) keeps us together on the court and off of the court,” Davis said. “(Teel) is not the most talented player we have but he’s one of the hardest workers. He’s made himself into a player. He can shoot because he’s put the time in.”
