No. 4: Perry reclaims state wrestling championship

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Perry Maroons wrestling team had plenty of motivation entering the 2012-2013 season. For the first time in eight years, the Maroons left the 2012 Class 3A state wrestling tournament with a silver trophy instead of gold. Last season Perry was focused on getting the gold trophy back.

“(Coach Ronnie Delk) put out the silver trophy in the locker room before dual state,” senior 152-pounder Austin Allen said. “Every time we came into the locker room we had to look at it. It made me sick.”

Perry dominated the first day of competition and led second-place Tonkawa 93-57 entering the second day of competition. The Maroons struggled on the second day of competition — only picking up one consolation victory. Dalton Revels, Austin Allen and Colton Looper all lost in the championship of their respective weight classes.

The Class 3A state championship came down to Perry’s 160-pounder David Thomas who went against Plainview’s Drake Martel. Thomas trailed 4-2 entering the third period but scored a late takedown to tie the bout. The first tiebreaker was scoreless. Thomas came through in the second — scoring on an escape to clinch the state championship for Perry.

“We knew we could compete with him, we just had to find a takedown,” Thomas said. “We got it early in the first period and after that we knew we got it even with it getting tied up. In the ultime tiebreaker, I got away and we won.”

“When David went into that match, I knew how hard he worked all season,” Delk said. “For him to get that win is incredible.”

The state championship was Perry’s 39th in school history. After winning, Delk already has his eyes on number 40.

“We got a great group coming back,” Delk said. “I’m ready to go for number 40.”

Last season, the Maroons not only brought back the state championship — they also defended their dual state championship for the fifth straight season.

In the semifinals, Perry took a 21-5 lead over Vian as Jake Biggs, Colton Looper and Austin Allen recorded falls. The Wolverines recorded a fall, major decision and decision to take a 24-21 lead.

Nate Wade rallied in the third period and tied the dual. Dalton Revels, Tevin Williams and Noah Nida, helped clinch the match with falls. The championship against Newkirk would be exactly the same.

The Maroons took the early lead, only to see the Tigers come back and take a 13-12 lead on a major decision and two decisions. Perry regained the lead with pins by Kyle Varley and Revels and a decision by Wade. Newkirk scored two decision victories and a fall to cut Perry’s lead to 27-25 — having the last bout determine the state title.

Perry’s 132-pounder Damian Tucker took on Newkirk’s Layne Leven and scored the first points with a takedown. Leven came back and scored a takedown with two near fall points. Tucker responded with a takedown and nearly pinned Leven to take a 7-6 lead after the first period. Leven retook the lead with a takedown in the second. In the last minute of the third, Tucker recorded a takedown and hung on for dear life to secure the title.

“I was thinking I got to win it for (my teammates),” Tucker said. “Our miniature goal is this and our major goal is state.
