Top-ranked Glencoe edges Pawnee in battle of state powerhouses

(Continued)

MORRISON, Okla. —

Assistant coach Mike Brock, did most of the coaching and said his team couldn't stop the Lazenby brothers in the second quarter.

“They scored the ball really well,” Brock said. “The two brothers scored really well. We didn’t do a good job of guarding them. We got to do a better job of identifying the main people we have to slow down.”

Pawnee suffered a blow to their depth as Caylan Biddy went down with a leg injury at the beginning of the second half. Biddy was helped off the floor and taken to the hospital.

“We don’t know anything yet but we will see,” Brock said.

The Black Bears rallied in the fourth quarter. Gideon Gardner scored 12 points and hit a 3-pointer to cut Glencoe's lead to 62-59 with two minutes left. The Panthers made free throws down the stretch to seal the game. Ty Lazenby erupted for 13 points in the fourth to finish with 27 for the game. Jake contributed 21. Brock said he was proud of his players for battling back.

“Playing a good team like that, shows you areas you got to work on,” Brock said. “It was a great opportunity. We were proud of the guys for fighting back. We were down by 19 and cut it to three. Against a team of that caliber, it shows the heart and character of our team.”

Gardner led Pawnee with 30. Nathan Brock scored 25. Glencoe and Pawnee will rematch Feb. 10 in Pawnee. The Panthers will visit Olive on Tuesday while the Black Bears visit Hominy on Monday.
