Perkins-Tryon boys, girls dominate Perry in district championships

PERRY, Okla. — Perkins-Tryon coach Norman Tippeconnie said his team can be streaky. Friday night in the Class 3A District 4 basketball championship, it was a good streak as the Demons hit four 3-pointers in the second quarter of a 58-43 victory over the host Perry Maroons.

“The kids played really hard,” Tippeconnie said. “We had a game plan going in and followed it pretty good.”

The first quarter and a half was back and forth as Perry held a 10-8 lead after one. The Demons were up by one, when they started their barrage of 3-pointers. Cody Waitt increased P-T’s lead to four. Caleb White and Carlton Belford followed with 3s to give the Demons a 25-15 lead. Perry coach Brandon Hight said that made the difference.

“We get outscored 22-8 in the second quarter,” Hight said. “... Those guys are good shooters. They were wide open and we didn’t do a good job of contesting. We got a little lazy and lackadaisical.”

The Maroons (12-11) rallied in the third quarter and early in the fourth. Perry’s Shaheem Turner was a force inside, scoring seven points in the third. The Maroons outscored Perkins-Tryon 11-8 to trail 38-30 after three.

“We fought hard in the third quarter and got back in the game. Cut it to six,” Hight said. “We kind of were scrambling around, pressing and trapping, which we normally don’t do. They got some easy ones at the end.”

P-T senior Caleb White scored a game-high 15 points. Waitt followed with 10 points. Kale Hixon led the Maroons with 13 points. Shaheem Turner contributed 11, with 10 in the second half.

Tippeconnie said his team was focused on defending both players.

“We are going to come defend you,” Tippeconnie said. “We are going to make it where you have to earn your points.”

The Demons (15-8) advance to the winner’s bracket and play at home at 8 p.m. Thursday. The Maroons start play in the consolation at 3 p.m. in Perkins Both coaches said it will be a challenge.

“My goal is to go in and win two games and get to Saturday,” Hight said. “I got one senior and two juniors, the rest are sophomores. Maybe getting this first playoff game out of the way will loosen them up a little bit.”

“The really good thing is we are at home,” Tippeconnie said. “... We’ve played some top teams this year and we are going to have to come out and play.”

P-T girls 44, Perry 18

The Lady Demons had no problem keeping their undefeated record alive as they routed the Lady Maroons 44-18 in the Class 3A District 4 basketball championship.
