Glencoe dominates opener; Frontier sweeps doubleheader

GLENCOE, Okla. —

The Glencoe Panthers got their 2013 fall baseball season off to a great start with a 9-1 rout of the Drummond Bulldogs Tuesday.

“We hit the ball pretty good and ran the bases well,” coach Tony Cazzelle said. “Hopefully we can continue our success.”

The Panthers scored three runs in the first inning and followed up with four in the second. Glencoe had plenty of contributors offensively. J.K. Headlock went 2-for-2 and scored two runs. Hunter Hall went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in. Claytin Beaver hit a double and drove in two. The Panthers’ baserunning also helped their offensive efforts with seven stolen bases. Sean Smith and Headlock each had two.

Ty Lazenby started and earned the win with two innings pitched. Headlock and Beaver each pitched two innings.

“We are going to pitch by committee,” Cazzelle said. “We are only going to throw our guys two to three innings to develop as many arms as we can. It worked well for us (on Tuesday) and our pitchers threw strikes.”

The Panthers (1-0) start play in the Varnum Tournament on Thursday against Mill Creek.

Mustangs open season with a pair of victories

RED ROCK — The Frontier Mustangs spent most of their summer working on their game and getting more experience. Tuesday, Frontier could see the fruits of their labor with an 11-8 and 13-0 victories over the Olive Wildcats.

“We had no errors, which is very good for us” coach Mike Allen said. “It’s something we’ve been talking about.”

The game was supposed to be in Olive but due to rain it was moved to Frontier. Brett Kincannon earned the victory in relief in game one and shut down the Wildcats’ bats. Talon Harris provided the offensive spark for the Mustangs with four hits and five runs batted in.

The second game only lasted three innings and run-rule was called just before the skies opened up.

Frontier (2-0) will host Mulhall-Orlando at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Ripley Warriors opener against Oilton was rained out and will be made up at 1 p.m. today in Ripley.
