ONLINE ONLY: Ripley wins opener against Oilton

RIPLEY, Okla. —

The Ripley Warriors scored early and often to pull away late in a 10-2 rout of the Oilton Panthers Wednesday in their season opener.

The teams were scheduled to play Tuesday but were rained out.

The Warriors (1-0) took a 2-0 lead only to see the Panthers score two in the top of the fourth to tie the game. Ripley responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and five in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.

Senior Garrett Gosney went 2 for 3 with a double and scored two runs. Junior Houston Twoguns was a perfect 2 for 2 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Twoguns also picked up the win in a three-inning relief effort, striking out six. Corey Sadler started and pitched the first three innings, earning a no-decision with five strikeouts.

Ripley oach Donnie Hoffman said he was happy with the win, but admitted his team could have played better as it also recorded two fielding errors.

“We didn’t play as well as we would have liked to on opening day,” Hoffman said. “Didn’t play as well as we practiced in the past week or so, but we got an opening day win and did some things really well. We play Cimarron (Thursday night) at the Cimarron Festival. Hopefully we continue to improve because we want to improve in every ball game that we play.”
