Frontier girls fall short of state championship game

OKLAHOMA CITY —  In the state tournament, it can be the little things that decide a game. In Friday’s Class A state semifinal, the Frontier Lady Mustangs were called for two fouls in the final 11 seconds and couldn’t sink a shot at the buzzer in a 35-34 loss to the No. 7 Seiling Lady Wildcats.

“They played hard and are a good bunch,” Frontier coach Bob Weckstein said about his team. “It comes down to a call here and there. We didn’t get them. (Seiling) is a deserving team and deserves to be in the finals.”

The Lady Mustangs (25-5) had the ball with 11.8 seconds left and were up by two with Seiling fouling to try to extend the game. Frontier’s Thristan Young’s jersey was grabbed by a Seiling defender and Young retaliated with an elbow, which led to a technical foul, that caused Young to foul out.

Seiling’s Taylor Hedrick made one of two free throws to tie the contest. Five seconds later Frontier’s Callie Lane was called for a foul. The Lady Cats’ Kelsie Pethoud sank the first free throw on a one-and-one to give Seiling a one-point lead. Frontier wasn’t able to get a shot off at the buzzer.

“We wished that Thristan hadn’t thrown that elbow,” Weckstein said. “We managed pretty good, we got the ball back and a chance to win. The girl grabs (Young) by the shirt and she was doing it all night and we warned the refs. She lost her cool and throw an elbow. Obviously she regrets that but that’s all as far as managing the end of the game.”

In the third quarter, Frontier grabbed momentum on a technical. Seiling’s Kaci Livingston slammed the ball after the ref called a jump ball. Lady Mustang senior Marissa Goodman sank both free throws to give Frontier a 22-21 lead. The Lady Mustangs pulled out to a seven-point lead after that but only led 30-28 after three.

Seiling (23-5) played ball-control offense in the first half and held the ball for more than two minutes at the end of the first quarter. Neither team shot well as both teams were under 40 percent from the field. The Lady Cats led 18-17 at halftime.

In her final game as a Lady Mustang Marissa Goodman shared the game high with 18 points and grabbed a game high 10 rebounds. Goodman is the only senior. Weckstein said she will be tough to replace.

“She’s a dandy,” Weckstein said. “It was a good year. Anytime you lose in the semifinals, you can’t be too upset.”
