Stillwater High boys lose opener to Bartlesville, 2-1

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater could not put away shot after shot – thus forcing a 2-1 loss.

The Pioneers outshot Bartlesville in its home opener Friday night 9-2. Bartlesville also scored on a penalty kick which helped the Bruins to a 2-1 win.

“We had quite a few chances to score but we just didn’t finish it,” Stillwater coach Seth Condley said. “I was proud of the guys. It was two good teams.”

Stillwater had a barrage of chances in the second half to tie the game but was unable to find the back of the net.

“We have to finish our chances,” Condley said. “We play an attacking mindset. We want to attack. We got a little tired but that’s no excuse. They were tired too.”

Stillwater was tested defensively but the Pioneers did not give up a shot on target attempt in the first 40 minutes of play.

SHS took three shots on goal which forced Bartlesville’s keeper to get to work in the first half. Bartlesville had two stops in the first half.

Pioneer Marlon McDonald sent the first goal of the new year into the back of the net with 11:50 to go in the first half to take a 1-0 advantage into the locker room.

Bartlesville fought to get the game level with 30:47 a shot from inside the box clanked off of the post and fortunately for Stillwater bounced out of danger.

Bartlesville’s first challenge on target came at the 25:07 mark in the second half.

BHS knotted the game up at 1-1 with a goal with 21:22 to play.

Stillwater was called for a foul with 13:07 to play in the box. Bartlesville’s Ricardo Saucedo tucked the ball away for a 2-1 Bruin lead.

“It was a legit call. The guy fouled him from behind in the box,” Condley said.

Stillwater now looks to prepare for another home game against Bishop McGuinness at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

“I think we put some pressure on the ball, we just didn’t finish some of those chances,” Condley said.
