Frontier’s Goodman gets MVP

STILLWATER, Okla. — During her high school career, Frontier senior Marissa Goodman has competed at the highest level of competition — reaching the state tournament in softball and basketball. This year was no different as Goodman led the Lady Mustangs to the state semifinals. The News Press named her the News Press Girls Basektball MVP.

Goodman, who won a state championship in 2012 with Frontier said it was special getting to play on successful teams during her career.

“It was good,” she said.

Goodman entered her senior year as the only player that played significant minutes from last season’s state quarterfinal team. This year she had to develop chemistry with players that only played when the game was in hand and freshmen.

“I felt like I had to carry the team early on,” Goodman said. “They got better and better.”

Goodman averaged 22 points per game and nine rebounds. At the free throw line she shot 82 percent. Opponents focused on stopping Goodman but guards Kristan Molina and Michaelanne Nelson helped divert that attention.

“They struggled shooting early on,” Goodman said. “Coach (Bob Weckstein) worked with them and they got better.”

Goodman said she got interested in playing basketball from her mother, who also played basketball.

“I wanted to grow up and be good as her,” Goodman said.

In this season’s Class A state tournament, Goodman scored 29 points in Frontier’s quarterfinals victory and scored 18 in the semifinals. Now with her high school career over, Goodman is trying to decide where to play college basketball.

“It’s a tough deciding where to go,” Goodman said.
