Stillwater Cup starts Friday

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Stillwater Pioneers and Lady Pioneers soccer teams will have a great chance to gauge their progress before district play as they host the Stillwater Cup Friday and Saturday.

“It’s the main reason we host this tournament,” boys coach Seth Condley said. “We bring in good competition and have the advantage of playing them at home.”

The Pioneers (2-1), who cracked into the 6A rankings Monday at No. 15 open the tournament with Class 4A No. 2 Santa Fe South (4-0)  8:40 p.m. Friday at Pioneer Stadium. Stillwater is coming off a 2-1 victory at Yukon on March 14. Condley said getting two wins before spring break was huge for his team.

“It’s been awhile since we’ve won a game before spring break,” Condley said. “We have a difficult task Friday night. No matter how that game turns out we have either Edmond Santa Fe or Ponca City.”

The Pioneers will play either Edmond Santa Fe (1-1), which is ranked No. 7 in Class 6A, or Ponca City (3-1) at 3:15 p.m. in the semifinals or 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the consolation — both games at Oklahoma State University’s Cowgirl Soccer Complex. Condley said he hopes to see his team get more shots on goal during the tournament.

“We spent the first three days back from spring break working on finishing sessions,” Condley said. “Hopefully we get more shots on goal and have a better chance of scoring. We generated several chances in our last game but didn’t get a lot of them on goal.”

Girls

The Lady Pioneers (0-3) open the Stillwater Cup with Coweta (3-0), which is ranked No. 2 in Class 5A  8:40 p.m. Friday at the Cowgirls Soccer Complex. Coach Joey Parker said it will be a tough game but hopes his team can come through.

“We want to win that first game and that’s what we are focused toward,” Parker said. “We looked pretty solid in practice and I’m looking forward to that first game.”

Stillwater will face Moore (3-0), which is ranked No. 17 in Class 6A or Enid (3-0), which is ranked No. 8 in Class 6A at 11:45 a.m. in the semifinals at the Cowgirls Soccer Complex or 10 a.m. in the consolation bracket at Pioneer Stadium. With this being their last contest before district play, it gives Parker one more chance to experiment.

“We’re going to try some players in different spots,” Parker said. “Hopefully, we can compete well.”
