Stillwater senior Callie Atkins inks to play basketball at McPherson

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater senior Callie Atkins was playing basketball in a summer league when she caught the eye of McPherson coach Cy Rolfs.

“She had good versatility for her size and confidence,” Rolfs said. “She’s got the size to go inside and out. She has good knowledge of the game and good court presence.”

Wednesday in Pioneer Fieldhouse, Atkins made her future official as she signed her letter of intent.

“On senior night, last game it was hard to finish the season,” Atkins said. “Knowing I get to continue to play is a nice feeling.”

Atkins said she made a visit to the school after meeting Rolfs and liked what she saw.

“I just loved the school,” Atkins said. “(Rolfs) offered and I said yes. It’s small, the environment is fun. The girls on the team are nice.”

Atkins was a two-year starter and a three-year letterwinner. In her final season, she averaged 5.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. Atkins recorded 15 steals and  three blocks. Stillwater girls basketball coach Carl Treat said he’s excited for Atkins and said she deserves it.

“This is a goal she set a very long time ago,” Treat said. “It’s great to see a kid accomplish a lot during the year for her to be able to play college ball. It’s great for the program and her.”

Atkins said all of her coaches helped her become a successful player.

“I’ve known them since I was pretty little,” Atkins said. “I’ve had so many coaches that have prepared me. My parents have supported me all the way. My family is just awesome.”

McPherson is part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and plays in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC). Atkins joins a team that went 14-15 last season. Rolfs said that he thinks Atkins fits his team’s culture.

“We expect her to give us depth at the forward position,” Rolfs said. “Our forwards extend the floor. We’re excited to add her to the family we already have. I think she will be a great addition for us.”

Treat said Atkins has an outstanding work ethic adding it will help her at the next level.

“She works hard,” Treat said. “Does what she is asked to do and improve her skills. That’s what you need to play at the next level.”

Atkins said she wasn’t sure how much playing time she would get but is looking forward to starting her college experience next year.

“(I’m looking forward to) getting used to the environment, the team and playing again at the college level.”
