Morrison ready to rebound after loss

CUSHING, Okla. — The Morrison Wildcats hope to limit the Fairland Owls’ rushing attack and advance in the Class A state playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Morrison.

“Everything goes through their quarterback,” coach Cory Bales said. “He’s a big kid and runs the ball really good.”

Freshman running back Jordan Quinata thinks they matchup well with the Owls and should have no problem on Friday.

“It’s a tough team but we are better,” Quinata said. “From the start of the season to right now we’ve gotten a whole lot better.”

Morrison (8-2) is coming off a 23-8 loss to Kiefer, which dropped it to second place. Bales said he is still very disappointed about how his team played last week.

“Turnovers were a big thing and penalties too,” Bales said. “We had a lot of penalties in the second half and turned the football over. If we hook up with the front (line) we will be in great shape again.”

Quinata said the team is over last week’s loss.

“We are ready,” Quinata said. “That’s out of our heads.”

Defensively, the Wildcats have been strong most of the season, holding their opposition to under 10 points in six of their 10 games. In the last two games Morrison gave up 20 points in its victory over Foyil on Oct. 26 and 23 last week. Fairland is averaging 29 points per game and giving up 21.

The Owls (6-3) have played competitive in most their games, only losing two by more than two touchdowns. One of those losses was 51-8 to Warner, which won the district with an undefeated record. Bales said his team’s success will be how it plays on the offensive and defensive lines.

“As long as we block, stay with our blocks and sustain everything, we will be OK,” Bales said. “If we do what we did last week and don’t stay with them we will have a hard time moving the ball.”

Morrison hopes its rushing attack of Quinata, senior quarterback Kyle Collins and junior running back Scott VanDorn can help move the ball downfield. In seven of the Wildcats’ 10 games, they’ve scored at least 40 points. Quinata said defense will be key.

“We just have to play really good defense,” Quinata said.

If the Wildcats win, they will face the winner of Wynnewood and Gore next week.
