ONLINE ONLY: Frontier advances to the state softball for fifth season in a row

CARNEY, Okla. —

The Frontier Lady Mustangs (10-20) went through plenty of ups and downs during the season as they dealt with injuries. Their season will end in a familar spot as they clinched their fifth straight berth in the Class B softball state tournament Friday in Carney.

“We played pretty well,” Frontier coach Erron Kauk said. “We are pretty excited.”

Frontier had its starting pitcher, Michaelanne Nelson, out for the majority of the season, with her making her return during the final week of the regular season. The Lady Mustangs opened the regional tournament Thursday with a 5-4 victory over No. 6 New Lima. Frontier advanced to the championship with a 6-5 victory over No. 15 Bowlegs in come from behind fashion.

“We were down 5-3 going into the bottom of the seventh,” Kauk said. “Alivia Molina led off with a triple. Kristen Molina hit a triple and made it 5-4. Marissa Goodman hit a groundball down the middle to score the run. MichaelAnne Nelson hit a hard base hit that riccocheted off the outfielder and  Goodman scored from first to win.”

The Lady Mustangs rematched with New Lima in the championship and won 8-4. Nelson picked up wins in all three games and hit the ball well. Shannon West and Goodman each recorded four hits in the championship. Frontier will find out their state quarterfinal opponent Monday.

Though they were playing on their home field, the Carney Lady Bulldogs didn’t put up the showing they hoped. Carney lost to Bowlegs 14-1 and 11-1 to New Lima on Thursday. Lady Bulldogs coach Lindsey Freeman said he thought the season went well despite the way it ended.

“We played flat and couldn’t get anything to go down,” Freeman said. “I don’t think we were the worst team but we played like it. We did pretty good this season. We were rolling for awhile but wavered off. Overall it was a good season for us.”
