Perkins-Tryon blows out Bristow to get back in district hunt

PERKINS, Okla. —

The Perkins-Tryon Demons entered Thursday’s game against the Bristow Purple Pirates needing a victory to stay in the District 1-3A race. P-T coach Lloyd Wertman was hoping his team would start fast. That’s exactly what happened as P-T controlled the clock and rushed for 448 yards in a 48-21 victory at McIlvain Field.

“I thought our defense did an excellent job,” Wertman said “That first group only punted once. We had long drives. We kept moving the sticks and kept the ball out of their hands.”

The Demons (4-3, 2-2) had three players with more than 100 yards rushing. Tyler Taff led the team with 133 yards on 22 carries and scored two touchdowns. Quarterback Shelby Reese ran for 108 yards on eight carries and Matt Waitt ran for 100 yards on 12 carries. Perkins had four drives of 60 or more yards with all of them ending in touchdowns. In the third quarter, P-T had a seven-play 90-yard scoring drive. Wertman said his line did a good job controlling the line of scrimmage, but added he was hoping to pass more.

“We tried a couple passes, but the pass protection broke down,” Wertman said. “We are still working on that very hard. We felt like we could control the line of scrimmage and we did from the get-go. We burned some time off the clock and kept the ball out of their hands.”

Quarterbacks Reese and Zac Bledsoe combined for 22 yards on six attempts. P-T’s running game received a boost as Jacob Peyton returned to action for the first time since Sept. 27 against Seminole. On seven carries he rushed for 72 yards — with his longest coming in the second half on a 45-yard run.

“We played (Peyton) spottingly,” Wertman said. “He will be full-go next week.”

In the second half, the Demons scored on all four second half possessions. Waitt scored on an eight-yard run during Perkins first possession of the second half. The Pirates turned the ball over on downs at the P-T 10. It only took the Demons seven plays to reach the end zone. Bledsoe finished the drive with a 15-yard run. At the beginning of the fourth, Taff scored his second touchdown on a seven-yard run.
