Morrison wins first district crown since 2007 with win over Kiefer

MORRISON, Okla. — Senior night sometimes brings the best out of seniors playing their final home game. With a district championship on the line, Morrison senior Scotty Van Dorn delivered with 304 yards rushing and two touchdowns in a 32-6 victory to clinch a district title over the Kiefer Trojans.

“We played well,” coach Cory Bales said. “Offensive line and running backs all did well. Scotty Van Dorn ran his (rear) off.”

Van Dorn said it felt good winning a district title especially after coming up short last year.

“I was pleased with how we played,” Van Dorn said. “We did everything we were supposed to. I wasn’t going to let (us losing) happen again.”

The senior running back had three runs of more than 50 yards. In the first half, he gained 53 yards to the Kiefer 25. In the second half, after Morrison forced Kiefer to punt, Van Dorn took the first play of the drive 68 yards for his second touchdown of the game, giving Morrison a 24-0 lead. Later in the quarter, Van Dorn broke a 55-yard run but the Wildcats drive would ultimately stall on downs.

“He’s so elusive for no more than he weighs,” Bales said. “Breaking tackles and doing the things he does makes him a special player.”

The Wildcats defense limited the Trojans, who averaged 43 points per game to 210 total yards of offense and didn’t allow Kiefer to score until 5 minutes left in the game. Bales said his defensive staff came up with a great game plan.

“Coach (Kyle) Fry and the defense played awesome,” Bales said. “We stopped the run and put them in long yardage situations and had pressure on the quarterback all night long.”

Van Dorn set up Morrison’s first scoring drive in the first quarter gaining all 63 yards – including runs of 23 and 27 yards. The senior capped off the drive with a one-yard run. Jordan Quinata scored the 2-point conversion to put Morrison ahead 8-0.

After Van Dorn’s 53-yard run in the second quarter, the Trojans’ defense stiffened and forced the Wildcats into a fourth-and-5 at the Kiefer 10. Quinata hit Van Dorn for a six-yard pass for a first-and-goal at the Wildcat four. Morrison went backwards on two plays as Quinata rushed for a loss of five and was sacked for five more yards. On fourth down, Quinata found Tristan Garringer open in the corner of the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown. Another conversion run by Quinata gave the Wildcats a 16-0 lead, which it would take to halftime.

Quinata was bottled up most of the game, gaining most of his 65 yards on a 67-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for Morrison’s final score. Van Dorn said he didn’t feel like he had to carry the team.

“It was a group effort tonight,” Van Dorn said. “The (offensive) line put it on their shoulders. It was all them.”

The Wildcats (9-1, 6-0) will host the fourth-place team from District A-8 next Friday. Bales said the real season will begin.

“Our measuring stick is not by district championships in Week 10,” Bales said. “It’s about how far we can go. People aren’t happy here unless we are playing over Thanksgiving.”
