Dickey made a career-high 31 points in senior night victory

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater senior Jared Dickey did not want his final game inside of Pioneer Fieldhouse go the wrong way. To combat that Dickey poured in 31 points against Ponca City last Tuesday night.

Dickey’s performance landed him not only his career-high in points scored but also the Stillwater News Press Stillwater Athlete of the Week. When Dickey looks back on senior night and sees the stat sheet, even he is surprised.

“I never thought that it would be me. Carson (Teel) always had that. It was just my night I guess,” Dickey said.

Stillwater has players that on any given night can fill up the bucket. Last Tuesday night Dickey was that player.

“We have people that will step up if they need to,” Dickey said.

Dickey has been involved in basketball since he was born. Dickey is the son of James Dickey, who was the head coach at Texas Tech when Jared was born. James spent a some time in Stillwater as an assistant at Oklahoma State and is currently the head coach at the University of Houston.

“I’ve grown up around it my whole life. Just being a part of it is great,” Jared said.

The Pioneers will play Sand Springs at Bixby at 6:30 p.m. Friday to begin regional play. The loser of the game is eliminated.

“I feel like we can do something really special. We have a really great chance of going to state,” Jared said. “We just have to give it everything we have and play as a team.”

Dickey said the night was not for him, it was for his teammate and fellow senior Brett Budke, who was injured at the time.

“That was a big game,” Stillwater coach Michael Davis said. “He comes from great parents and they taught him the right way. He’s started, he’s come off of the bench, he’s done whatever we needed him to do.”

Davis said that Dickey could start for the Pioneers. Instead, the energy that Dickey brings off of the bench helps SHS greatly.

“I like him coming off of the bench,” Davis said. “Him winning player of the week is well deserved. He earned it.”
