Eight area wrestlers reach state finals

OKLAHOMA CITY — Last season, the Perry Maroons had the Class 3A state wrestling title wrapped up after the first day. After Friday’s competition at Jim Norick State Fair Arena, the Maroons won’t have much of a cushion as they lead Class 3A only by 11 points.

Entering Saturday’s competition, Perry leads with 78 points. Chandler is in second with 67.5 and Tonkawa is third with 65. The Maroons only sent eight of their 12 wrestlers to the semifinals and only four of those wrestlers advanced to Saturday’s finals.

Cale Betchan (106) advanced with two decision victories including a 2-0 decision in the semifinals against Sperry’s Louden Aikin. Colton Looper dominated in the 152-pound weight class, scoring a victory by fall in the quarterfinals and a 14-4 major decision victory in the semifinals against Tonkawa’s Kevin Howard. David Thomas advanced with a 9-4 decision victory in the semifinals against Keys Seth Fritts. Garrett Beier had no problems advancing in the 195-pound weight class with two victories by fall. Beier will face Barnsdall’s Caleb Hawes in Saturday’s finals.

Noah Nida, who held a top seed in the 120-pound weight was upset in the semifinals, losing by fall Salina’s Cullen Patterson. Blake Avery was upset in the 132-pound weight class, losing by an 8-5 decision to Jay’s Derick Shrum.

Riley Betchan fell to Blackwell’s Sam Schuerman in the 170-pound weight class. Bo Montez fell by decision 9-2 to Davis’ Braden Ruth.

Cushing sent three to the finals and four still have a chance to place in Saturday’s action. Gage Stallworth advanced to the finals with two victories by fall. The senior will battle Tuttle’s Seth Shelton to finish with an undefeated season.

“It’s exciting,” Stallworth said. “I’ve never wrestled anyone from Tuttle before. I’m looking forward to it and hope to come out 22-0.”

Daniel Hood is looking to cap off his career with a victory in the 113-pound finals. Hood won both of Friday’s matches by fall, with his victory in the quarterfinals in 37 seconds. Hood will face Tuttle’s Tanner Litterell in the finals. Mason Roberts advanced in the 126-pound bracket with a fall and a 9-2 decision.

Cushing is in second with 60 points and well behind five-time defending Class 4A state champion Tuttle, which has 134.5 points.

“Tuttle was the clear favorite,” Cushing coach Chad Short said. “We are going to go out and battle (on Saturday).”

Pawnee's Marlon Houston Jr. advanced to the finals for the second straight year, this time in the 182-pound weight class. Houston defeated Davis' Connor Webb with a 3-2 decision in the semifinals. Houston lost in the 170-pound finals last season. Perkins-Tryon's Garrett Self is shooting for a medal in the 195-pound weight class after winning his consolation match by fall. P-T's Clark Crotty lost both matches in the 182-pound weight class.
