STILLWATER, Okla. —
Dylan Murrell may be the smallest player on the court in most games the Stillwater High boys’ basketball team plays in.
But never underestimate things in small packages.
Over the weekend, the 5-foot-5 senior point guard was named the Ada Tournament Most Valuable Player and is this week’s Stillwater Athlete of the Week.
“I’ve always wanted to win MVP of a tournament,” Murrell said. “I always want to just play as well as I can and I felt like I played a pretty good tournament. And it really wasn’t as much about the award as much as the fact that we got the win.”
Murrell scored the game-winning shot in Stillwater’s come-from-behind victory over Carl Albert, one of the top ranked teams in Class 5A, in the championship game of the Ada tourney.
“I wasn’t thinking that I was going to hit the game-winner, I was just wanting to get a good shot. They set up a zone and coach called ‘heat’ and I was thinking, ‘Well, this is most likely going to be me taking the shot,’” Murrell said. “I threw it Tyler (Holcomb) and the defender tried to cheat on it, so Tyler hit me and I had a drive to the baseline and went for it. I knew I had to put a floater up, because that would be the only way I was going to score and it went in.”
