Stillwater softball falls in regional tournament to Owasso

OWASSO, Okla. — The Stillwater Lady Pioneers were simply no match for the Owasso Lady Rams as Owasso batted around and scored 13 runs in the first inning of an 18-3 victory in the consolation finals of a Class 6A softball regional.

All of the Lady Rams starters reached base in their first plate appearance. Owasso’s Skylar Compton delivered the biggest blow to the Lady Pioneers as she hit a grand slam over the center-field wall giving the Lady Rams a 5-0 lead.

Stillwater recorded its first out when Owasso’s leadoff hitter Katy Taylor hit a grounder to Lady Pioneer pitcher Taylor Lane, who got a force out at third for her only out. Lane was pulled a couple batters later after giving up 12 runs (11 earned) in just 1/3  inning. Sixteen Lady Rams came to the plate in the first and put Stillwater in a 13-0 hole entering the bottom of the first.

“I told them we need one base hit at a time,” Stillwater coach Amber Davis said. “We could have still come back. Once again, you have a bunch of freshmen and sophomores that were put in a situation that they haven’t been and nerves got the best of us.”

Desperately needing runs and baserunners, McKinsey Stokes tried to start a rally as she led off with a double. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Emily Madison, Stokes scored on a single by Hailey McDaniel — sliding into home for style points.

“The slide wasn’t really necessary,” Stokes said. “I just thought it might be the last run I ever score and might as well do it.”

Stokes went 2 for 3 in her final game. Davis was pleased with how Stokes stepped up but wish more players did.

“She stepped up as a senior and got us going,” Davis said. “We just weren’t able to help her out.”

Stillwater, again, struggled in the field as it committed four errors with two of them leading to three Owasso runs.

In the first, catcher Halley Randolph tried to throw out Compton at second but threw the ball into center field and the ball went to the fence allowing A.J. Waggnor and Compton to score. In the fourth inning, Sydney Scott couldn’t pick up a ball that bounced off the bag allowing Kenzie Stevens to score.

Lauren Jenkins picked up the win for the Lady Rams as she allowed one run on three hits and struck out three in two innings pitched. Jaycee Forth pitched two scoreless innings while Jentri Sinor closed the game. The Lady Rams (27-9) lost to Sand Springs (28-8) in the championship 3-1.

The Lady Pioneers (8-18) wouldn’t score again until their final at-bat in the bottom of the fifth after the Lady Rams pulled all of their starters. Stillwater loaded the bases with no-one out. Courtney Hughes scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by McDaniel. Halley Randolph hit an RBI double to score the Lady Pioneers’ final run of the season.

Davis said Thursday’s result was very similar to several results her team suffered during the season — but is optimistic about the future.

“We took some blows to the chin,” Davis said. “We got 13 coming back and we got 10 coming up in the freshman class, we will be all right.”
