Waitt carries load for Perkins-Tryon

STILLWATER, Okla. — Perkins-Tryon senior Matt Waitt would be football’s version of a utility player. This season, Waitt started at wide receiver and kicker. Due to injuries, Waitt got a couple starts at running back.

“I’m blessed,” Waitt said. “I do what the coaches need. I feel like I can quarterback if I need to.”

It’s that kind of attitude that has helped turn Waitt into a solid player for the Demons and a key contributor on the offensive side of the football. Oct. 17 against the Bristow Purple Pirates was a perfect example as Waitt rushed for 100 yards on 12 carries and scored two touchdowns in a 48-21 victory. The senior said he was surprised how easily P-T won.

“I was expecting the game to be pretty tough,” Waitt said. “They played tough but they just didn’t adjust to our offense. The line was blocking well all game and they couldn’t stop our run.”

Football is only the start of Waitt’s sport year as he plays basketball and baseball. Waitt said he’s also looking at running track.

“I’m going to try to run when I don’t have games or tournaments,” Waitt said.

The senior utility player said at times it’s tough constantly being in sports but he enjoys it because he is around his friends.

“I like all the sports I play and I’m active in all of them,” Waitt said. “There are times I wish I could hang out with my friends but a lot of my friends play the sports I play. So I get to hang out with them in the sport.”

Waitt has big hopes for his future as he hopes to continue to play in college.

“I’m hoping to go to Oklahoma State and tryout for a spot,” Waitt said.

The Perkins-Tryon senior said if he doesn’t make the team, he will be studying education and hopes to be a coach.

“I will use quite a bit about what coach (Lloyd) Wertman taught us,” Waitt said. “I will use everything I’ve learned from my coaches, when I do become a coach.”
