Lady Demons down Lady Buffaloes in quarterfinals, face defending state champs in semis

OKLAHOMA CITY — Typically, the Perkins-Tryon Lady Demons have no problem pulling out to a large lead. Thursday at Jim Norick State Fair Arena, the Lady Demons struggled hitting shots but played good defense to record a 57-47 victory over the Hugo Lady Buffaloes in the Class 3A state quarterfinals at State Fair Arena.

“I don’t know if it was first game or what it was,” Burnett said. “ ... It’s over, we got the win and we move on.”

The Lady Demons shot 40 percent from the field and turned the ball over 14 times, five more than the Lady Buffaloes. P-T started quickly as seniors Jordan Gorham and McKenzie Stanford scored to give the Lady Demons a 7-0 lead.

Hugo didn’t score until Ray’Shionne Smith hit a 3-pointer with 3:29 left in the first. Smith hit a second three and Charmany Tarkington scored a 3-point play to even the score. The Lady Demons led 13-9 after the first with Stanford and Gorham supplying the scoring.

In the second, the Lady Demons’ offense opened up as seniors Lacey Shipp and Siara Breeden and junior Jeri Adkism hit 3-pointers. Those shots helped Perkins-Tryon pull out to a 35-24 halftime lead. Stanford said the guards stepped up.

“We relied on our guards to make their shots,” Stanford said.

The Lady Demons’ offensive momentum from the second didn’t carry over into the third. P-T didn’t score until Stanford made a basket with 3:45 left in the quarter. Smith scored six points in the quarter to cut the Lady Demons’ lead to 40-33.

“We struggled all day,” Burnett said. “We couldn’t hit from inside or outside.”

In the fourth quarter, Perkins-Tryon put the game away with its free-throw shooting, converting 11. Hugo wasn’t able to get closer and had two players foul out. Burnett said he hopes his team gained confidence having to fight through adversity.

“Adversity comes with playing in The Big House,” Burnett said. “We handled the pressure and hopefully this gives us confidence heading into the (semifinals).”

Stanford said she thinks they did a good job on defense.

“I think we did good at keeping them in front of us,” Stanford said. “We did good at blocking out and getting the boards. Coach said going in that we needed to get every board and not give them a second chance.”

The Lady Demons out-rebounded Hugo 42-29. Gorham led the Lady Demons in scoring with 19 and shared the team lead with sophomore Bailey Wensler in rebounds with 11. Stanford scored 15. Hugo’s Smith led all scorers with 25.

Perkins-Tryon advanced to the semifinals and was scheduled to play the defending state champion Millwood Lady Falcons at 9 a.m. Friday.

“Everybody up here is good,” Burnett said. “... There’s four teams left. We are excited to be where we are at and our going to give it all we have tomorrow.”
