Glencoe baseball one win away from state

DEPEW, Okla. — The Glencoe Panthers already have a state championship in boys basketball. After the first day of regionals, Glencoe is a win away from advancing to the Class A state baseball tournament as it beat Depew 7-2 and Dewar 10-6.

“It’s a really good feeling to have a shot of going to the state tournament,” Glencoe coach Tony Cazzelle, who led Ripley to the state tournament in 1998. “It’s a tribute to the kids. ... We are on a roll right now and hopefully we can play well (Friday) and get that victory.”

In the first game against Depew, Glencoe struck first with an RBI double by Taylor Cavett, who later scored on a wild pitch. After Depew scored in the second, Glencoe added two more in the third off of errors by Depew. The Panthers put the game away in the seventh as Quentin Ash and Nathan Melton hit RBI doubles and Cavett recorded his second RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Cavett earned the win on the hill, allowing two runs on three hits, three walks and struck out eight.

In the second game against Dewar, Glencoe took a 4-1 lead in the second inning. Bryce Williams hit a two-run double to score Sean Smith and Andrew Kuhn. Dewar rallied for two runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 5-4 lead.

The Panthers responded in the bottom of the fifth with five runs. Cavett hit a RBI single. Smith hit a two-run double and Hunter Hall hit his fifth home run of the season.

Glencoe will have its first shot of punching its ticket to state at 6 p.m. Friday.
