Perry girls tennis eyes state championship

STILLWATER, Okla. — After winning their regional Monday, the Perry Lady Maroons are seeking a bigger prize as they start competition in the Class 3A state tennis tournament Friday in Oklahoma City.

“We’ve come close the last couple years finishing second and third,” coach Jeff Sullins said. “It’s what we’ve been shooting for all season and hopefully we can come away with an individual title and state title.”

The seeds come out Thursday. Lauryn Sullins won the number one singles. Amber Isaac and Ashlea Calhoon won number two doubles. Marrisa Wright finished second in number two singles and Emily Brown and Kayla Woods finished third in number one doubles. Coach Sullins said he wished the team would have performed better but is confident about state.

“Our number one doubles took a bad loss, lost in the semifinals,” Sullins said. “They probably won’t be seeded. If they get a good draw they could still place. We should have the one seed in singles and number two doubles. We should be in the mix for the team race.”

The Lady Maroons have been ranked second all year behind Metro Christian. Sullins said he thinks his team can compete.

“(Metro Christian) is really good,” Sullins said. “They should have a one seed in singles and doubles. I think we have a chance.”

Sullins said getting a championship would be satisfying.

“We haven’t had an individual or team champion,” Sullins said. “Hopefully we can pull that off.”
