HOMINY, Okla. —
The Morrison Wildcats’ bread and butter this season has been their running game. Early against the Hominy Bucks the running game wasn’t there. Still, Morrison was able to throw the ball and pulled away in a 38-6 victory.
“We completed seven of 12 passes for 123 yards,” coach Cory Bales said. “We were able to spread it around.”
Bales said he was really impressed with how his team overcame adversity.
“We had 11 penalties for 150 yards,” Bales said. “Three times we were able to overcome first-and-25s and second-and-20s. For the first time these kids faced adversity and handled it great.”
With the district competition getting tougher as Yale (4-1, 2-0) and Kiefer (5-0, 1-0) are looming, the passing game could become more important for the Wildcats.
“It’s something we work on getting better at every day,” Bales said. “We work on it every game.”
Morrison was held scoreless in the first quarter and scored late in the second quarter to lead 16-0 at halftime. The Wildcats picked up another score in the third and two touchdowns in the fourth. Morrison got the running game going later and racked up 223 yards. Junior quarterback Kyle Collins ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
The Wildcats host Yale at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Perkins-Tryon (3-2, 1-1) 43,
Bethany (2-3, 0-1) 20
BETHANY — The Demons haven’t exactly lit up the scoreboard this season as their highest point total was 19 in Week 2. All that changed Friday night, as Perkins-Tryon jumped out early to defeat the Broncos 43-20.
The Demons scored 17 points in the first quarter and added 13 in the second to take a 30-6 lead at halftime. Both teams exchanged scores in the second half.
Senior quarterback Caleb White threw for 75 yards and a touchdown on four completions. The senior also rushed for 25 yards. Junior Tyler Taff led the team in rushing with 123 yards on 10 carries. Sophomore Jacob Peyton contributed 64 yards rushing and also caught two passes for 41 yards.
Tonkawa (2-3, 1-1) 16,
Pawnee (1-4, 0-2) 7
TONKAWA — After both teams were shutout last week, both put points on the board Friday but the Black Bears didn’t quite put enough up in a 16-7 loss to the Buccaneers.
Paydon Moore scored Pawnee’s only touchdown in the first quarter. The Buccaneers also scored and converted a two-point conversion for an 8-7 lead. Tonkawa scored a second touchdown in the third quarter.
Quarterback Marlon Houston Jr. threw for 57 yards and had one pass picked off. Browning Nicolet led the Black Bears in rushing with 68 yards, averaging five per carry. Joshua Big Bear-Hand led the team in receiving with two receptions for 19 yards.
